Our Opinion
In Royan the continent meets the Atlantic Ocean and its long
beaches separate the sea from the inland pine trees. You will find this modern
holiday resort at the mouth of the Dordogne and Garonne rivers, on the south
side of the Poitou-Charentes region about 60km from la Rochelle and 120km from
Bordeaux. Royan is not only a resort because of its climate it also offers spectacular
sights, a diverse landscape and excellent cuisine - all making your stay here
very worthwhile. With a 12km beach of fine sand, Royan is also named "The gateway
to the Atlantic Ocean" and you can enjoy all the advantages of such a location
including swimming, diving, surfing, sailing and visiting the many waterfront
bars and cafés.
Royan is a good example of the successful symbiosis between
historical and modern architecture with the harbour and modern office buildings
blending with historical sights to form architectural unity. As one of the oldest
French sea-side resorts Royan not only treasures today's modern tourism, but
it also values its past with its churches, chapels, castles and parks. The proximity
of the sea also makes this an excellent location for good food and for those
who like fish every meal is a culinary feast. The wine and brandy are also very
good, both enjoying an excellent reputation worldwide.
Our School
The Vis a Vis partner school in Royan has an excellent reputation
as a French language institute. The school belongs to the University of Poitiers
and the city of Royan. It was founded in 1966 as a combined language institute
for teaching French as a foreign language and as a teacher training centre.
The school also welcomes French students learning German, English and Spanish.
